OH ! THE CHRISTMAS DINNER
WHAT HAPPENED IN CHRIST- ,j CHURCH. I Christchurch, Dec. 26. j Last Christmas afternoon the j people of Christchurch were;, alarmed by a severe shock of earthquake, foil ay they were startled J>y a heavy thunderstorm, which passed over the 1 city at 1.30 p.m. Thunder _ and lightning played with-alarming niton sity for a few minutes, but the rain was confined to a couple of shewets. In one case a number of people were deprived of their Christmas 1 dinner. The gong had just gong in the Ring George Hotel in High Street, when the lightning struck j lire kitchen chimney and spin ’t j open. The dinner, which was cn j the kitchen range ready to be served, j was completely mined by the soot j and debris which came clown the 'chimney. The lightning did other j miner damage in the hotel. i Showers of rain fell later in the j afternoon and the 1 atmoshpere was. ; delightfully cool after the recent excessive heat.
