GIRL GUIDES
An event of some importance to all interested in the Girl Guide movement, will be the visit of Miss Prior and Mrs Wilson to Tanranga on Friday next. Misg Prior,an Imperial Guide, representing headquarters, London, gave an interesting address on the guide movement, in whose interest she is at present tonring Australia and New Zealand, at the Lyceum Club, Auckland, last week. The movement, she said, aimed at giving girls a training whereby they were better fitted to cope with tie battle of life and to take up their Responsibilities as citizens. By getting at the hearts of the girls and interest- • ing them in guide work they were being given an education that trained their minds, employed their hands, and inculcated a sense of honour, duty and loyalty. Chiding might be' called the greatest, game that has ever been . played. Work done because of the interest in the work itself is more valuable than work done a s a duty. The enthusiam that is put into work adds to its quality and' work that is done intelligently helps a girl to think for herself, and not: depend too much on other people. The physical side is also trained and the girls are taught to take care of their bodies that they may become strong, healthy women, They do a. certain amount of drill. They are taught signalling and knob-tying., which increases the power of concentration, makes the mind ' and tlia membty retentive. The guide law is one of high ideals and the promise of the guider to obey that law is- a very sacred' one. ! Mias Prior will deliver an address in the Town Hal] on Friday evening.
