At the meeting of the Matamata. County Council on the 14th hist., a letter was read from Messrs Bruce Beal© and Carden, solicitors, Tauranga, instructed by Mr D. Walker, pioprietor of the Tauranga-Mata-mata motor service, who communicated with the Council regarding the matter of license fees payable on cars carrying passengers between Tauranga and Matamata. —This letter was similar to that sent to the Tauranga County Council and published yesterday.
The suggestion was favourably received, and the council will take steps to ascertain whether it is possible for such a fee to be levied.
tinder separate cover Mr Walker advised that he had completed the grading, etc., on the Kaimai Road, audi would be glad t'o receive a cheque for £lO, being the amount promised. On the sth ultimo the clerk wrote to Mr Hockly, M.P., asking for Government assistance towards the cost of maintaining the road. In reply the Minister of Public Works informed Mr Hockly that were the County Council to declarei the road a County main Road the chief difficulty in respect to . finance' would disappear. As this is a main road, he said, this is obviously tbia correct action for the Coun t to take. If the Council will take such action he would 1 be pleased to give the matter further • consideration, but in the meantime he regrets that he cannot favourably entertain the application for a Government sub sidy.
