W. Jones ••• 305 Messrs Brown and Murdoch were re-elected. As soon as the results of the Mayoral election was known Mr. Dive briefly addressed the crowd from the steps of the Municipal chambers. He thanked the people for again electing him as Mayor of the town. He also thanked those who had been opposed to him for the manner in which they had fought the contest. Having been again elected to the honourable position of Mayor of the town he could only say that he would do his best for it, and seek its progress on good sound lines. He then called for three cheers for Mr Robbins, which were heartily given. Mr Robbins said that the contest had been very close and was still uncertain. However, accepting the position as announced he could only say that he had expected, from the manner in which he had been approached by a number of people asking for a change, that he would on this occasion have been elected. He ! thought he was right in saying that from his past record he should have had the confidence of the people sufficient to have returned him as Mayor. He could not help expressing the hope that the figures would be reversed and that it would be found he had been elected. He had to express his satisfaction at the manner in which his opponent, Mr Dive, had conducted the campaign. In conclusion he thanked all who had recorded their votes in his favour, and he especially thanked the members of his committee for the hard work they had put into the contest. Three cheers wore then called for and given Mr Dive. THE COUNCILLORS. Mr F. Allely was the first to mount the steps and was greeted with applause. In a short characteristic speech he thanked nil who had supported him, and could only promise to do his very best in the interests of the town. He was very proud indeed to have been placed in such a position as a borough councillor, one of the most honoured positions in the town. Messrs Ollard, Whiting, Clinkard, Beale and Jones also briefly returned thanks for their election.
