The matter of a rural mail service was also brought under the notice of the Minister, and received a very favourable reply. Several settlers brought forward reasons why this system of mail should be installed here, the main one being that at present the mails are carted as much as 2 1-2 miles past settlers' gates, the settler having to catch ci horse and ride the 2 1-2 miles to cart it back, and on this particular route the expense of the department would be practically nil. The reply received in the matter of connecting up Kaimai with Te Poi with telephone was not nearly so favourable as on the previous request. The Minister stated that the policy of the Government was to link up districts which at present had no telephone connection at all.

A vote of thanks to Mr Contes brought business to a close, and after refreshment, kindly supplied by Mr? Hunt, I lie party resumed their journey to Tauranga about 10 o’clock, behind two good draught horses.

KATIKATI. (From our Correspondent). Satin day last was a busy day for the firm of J. P. Gamble, general diapers, from Waihi, who opened a one day drapery sale in the dining room of the Show buildings. This was muck appreciated by the residents, judging by the way the stream of customers kept the staff going. Very little of the stock brought out had to be taken back. Mr Gamble, I believe, intends to conic, here every fortnight. A masquerade and fancy dress tall in aid of the fund for the tea Pavilion which it is intended to erect in the Uretara Domain is to take place on June ‘2nd, Full particulars will be announced later. The Ailicurce district school (Katikali No. I), which has just been granted a constitution of their own, held their first election on Monday evening. To celebrate the event they made a social gathering of it. About forty people were present, half of whom were householders. The following nominations for the committee were received: Wm. Taylor, Wm. Lcckington, E. Nicbol, W. Waterson, S. Clark, Mrs Giles and Mrs Lockington, the ballot resulting in the defeat of the two ladies. Mr Taylor was elected chairman and Mr Clark secretary. At the Katikati No. 3 about twenty people attended, and the following committee was elected: — Messrs W, J, Andrews (chairman), N. Blomquist (secretary), F. Boyes, B. Clark and A. Walker. At Katikati Central school only three householders put in an appearance, besides the chairman, which goes to show that very little interest in school matters is shown in this part of the district, where people live all around the school. However two new members for the committee had to he found to take the places of the two that represented Katikati No. 1, so the old committee will have to do another turn.
