ROAD TO GOLD REEFS
DEPUTATION WAITS ON COUNTY COUNCIL Messrs G. Muuq managing director, and J. R. Noble, general manager of the Te Puke Gold Reefs, waited on the County Council on Friday last with a request for the improvement of the road to the Te Puke gold mines. Mr Muir referred to the bad state of the road. He said he understood the Council had considerable gold duty to its credit. He hoped the Council would devise a scheme to improve the road and do it in one hit, using the gold duty to wipe off the indebtedness. The Chairman —We have not received any gold duty yet.
Mr Noble said there should be £350 of gold duty due to the Council, but the Council could not collect it until the bullion was exported. The bulk of the gold had been exported. The gold duty will not be less than £ißoo per year.
The Clerk, in reply lo questions, stated that the only sums rec fived as gold duty up to the pre ?ent were £l2B /s 6d on June 10, IQ2O, and £lO 8s on June 20, ig:i. The Chairman intimated (hat as ; oon as the gold duty was av; "liable he would confer with the Te Puke councillors on the question of improving the road to the mines.
The deputation thanked the Council and withdrew.
