WOOD PULP AND PAPER

It was stated to a New Zealand Times reporter a few days ago that negotiations for the establishment of the wood pulp and paper industry on the West Coast are well in hand. It is proposed to use the sawmills’ waste as the raw material. The large amount of waste available in the Westland district may be gathered from the fact that there are 53 sawmills with a total wastage of over 100 cords per day. This proposal, it is said, which will considerably reduce our foreign trade account for paper, will be welcomed as helping towards a solution of the economic utilisation of the forest resources.
