langements for carting same. Cr Grant objected to the amendment. Cr Griffin said the amendment would do away with his resolution. Cr Grant argued that notice of motion was necessary. The Chairman: Cr Grant, you are not going to dictate to me. Cr Grant—l have the right to point out to you that it is your duty as Chairman to give the Council a leai in matters of this kinl. Cr Hume characterised the position as funny. Fie moved an amendment-That tenders be opened and that the lowest tenderer be asked for a price for carting the , metal to McGhie’s Road. Cr Grant rose to a point of order, and said the previous motion would have to be rescinded before the amendment could be considered. It was pointed out by the engineer that only one contract was involved, viz., No. 49, for carting 1 about 250 cubic yards of metal from Paengaroa Station to the Paengaroa Station Village Road. On the motion of Cr Flume, the Council decided to hear the Pongakavva deputation on other matters, and then open the tenders. Cr Ball said the deputation desired that more work be done on the Pongakawa Road. The pumice was getting washed away and the lulls required attention, Ho had been informed- that the Council was thinking of going in for the contract! system on the roads. If so would a- man go along and fill in holes only? The deputation wanted certain parts of the road pumiced. The Chairman explained that the matter of letting the roads by contract had been deferred. There was very little money for maintenance, and the Council was only in a position to do emergency work. The engineer would look into the deputation’s request. . Cr Ball thanked the Council and the deputation withdrew. Subsequently Ihe Council opened tenders received for ten contracts. All the tenders in the Maketu Riding, except those for Contract No 49, were dealt with and tenders accepted. Cr Grant objected to accepting a tender for Contract No 50, carting about 260 cubic yards of metal from McGhie’s Crossing to portion of McGhie’s Road adjoining. He contended that as Cr Griffin’s resolution had been carried and was not rescinded that Contract Nos. 49 and 50 should be held over. Fie requested that his name be recorded as voting against the acceptance of a tender for Contract No. 50. Cr Grant’s name was recorded as requested. The Council further discussed the question and decided that a meeting of ratepayers be held at Paengaroa on Thursday, April 13, at 2 pan., when the Chairman and councillors will be present to discuss the matter. The Chairman asked the Council if the decision of the meeting of ratepayers was to be accepted as final. Cr Griffin intimated that as tar as he was concerned lie was willing to abide by the decision of the meeting. For Bronchial Cone},*. bb r - Wood-’ lirtiii IVpp-rani.t Oure.
