HADFIELD EASILY WINS SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP

ARNST BEATEN BY TEN LENGTHS i sPer Press Association—Copyright.) Wanganui, Jan 5, 4.2 p.m. Hadfield defeated Arnst for the world’s sculling championship by ten lengths. Wanganui, Jan 6 The race between Arrist and Hadfield was very disappointing. After going a quarter-of-a-mile Hadfield was a length ahead, and it was obvious that Arnst’s star had set. He was putting in powerful strokes, but was labouring, whereas the challenger was rowing beautifully and steering a course as straight as an arrow-. At three-quarters _of a mile ll.idfield was three lengths ahead. Arnst’s head was dropping with every stroke, and he was constantly looking round. At the mile and a half mark he was in , distress and by the time two miles were reached he was out of it. Turning into the home stretch he quickened up, but it was only a flash in the pan. Hadfield, sculling like a machine, went on smoothly and amid whistling and tooting landed an easy winner by ten lengths. The time was 19 mins. 45 secs. After tne race Arnst said he had met a man who was too good for him. Hadfield was better than the training operations had led him' to suppose. He had thought he was back to his old form but was evidently too old. This was to have been his last race in any case. Hadfield said the race had not distressed him and he spoke generously of his opponent. WAIKATO RIVER AS SUITABLE COURSE Hamilton, Jan 6 A committee of rowing enthusiasts has been formed in Hamilton with the object of making enquiry into the possibilities bf securing the next race for the world’s sculling title for the Waikato River, where a suitable championship course is available within easy access of both Auckland and Hamilton.
