DEFENCE RETRENCHMENT
Wellington, Jan 5 Jiight New Zealanders who graduated last year at Duntroon have been informed that commissions cannot be given them in the New Zealand Army. There are only six overseas commissions for which they may apply. This is part of an economy campaign which it is understood the Defence Department is under instructions to carry oat Although a large number of officers were retrenched last year, it is believed there are still a large number to be retired in the near future. The need for retrenchment means that these specially train ed Duntroon students will have no chance of carrying on their profession in New Zealand, and thdir four years’ training may be utterly wasted.
