PRESENTATION

—,— * Members of various sporting bodies gathered at the Tauranga Hotel on Tuesday efeniug to bid farewell to Mr. J. D. Cullen, storekeeper of the Public Works Departmeut, who has been transferred to Otira. His Worship the Mayor, Mr. B. Dive, referred to the interest taken iu Rugby by Mr. Culleu during las slay iu Tauranga. He eulogised his services to the Rugby Union aud sport generally, and expressed regret that he was leaving the town. On behalf of many friends he then presented Mr. Cullen with a cigarette holder aud silver ease and a tobacco pouch.

Mr. Cullen returned thanks for the gifts, and said they would always serve to remind him of his happy association with his sporting friends in Tauranga. Messrs. W. Churchill, C. F. Oliver, P. S. Densem, J. A. Jordan, and E, Chadban all added tributes on behalf of various sporting organisations, to‘ the whole-hearted manner in which Mr. Culleu had worked for the advancement of sport in this district. During the week Mr. Cullen left for his new sphere in the South Island.

Katikati are deeply conscious of the great service their young men rendered in the war, 'They will stand for all time as their grateful-tribute to the memory of those who gave their lives in the Great Cause. Across the main gates appears—- “ Memorial to Our Fallen in the Great War,” On the left hand pillar is a tablet engraved “These yatos were erected by the residents of Katikati in grateful recognition of the splendid service rendered in the Great War by the boys of this district, who answered the call of King and Country.” On the right hand pillar is a tablet, headed—- “ Roll of Honour Killed in Action.” Then appear the following names-.
