BOWLING
PROBABLE sf’LlT BETWEEN
NORTH AND SOUTH
At a social gathering tendered at Christchurch to the Otago interprovincial bowling team, which defeated Canterbury, Mr, C. S. Smith, past president of the Association, responding to the toast of the Dominion Bowling Association, said that it was seven or eight years since the association was constituted, and it could safely be said that it had to a great extent justified its existence, but it was a question whether there were not rocks ahead. First there was the proposal to appoint a permanent secretary. That proposal was the thin end of the wedge to a permanent headquarters, and he hoped that Christchurch' bowlers would take a firm stand against it. Another question was that of the annual tournament. What was to become of it? Unless some better techeme were devised the tournament would tumble over though its own nnwieldiness. The third point concerned the fact that the South Islanders were in favour of doubles, while the North Islanders 'would not mind sticking solely to rinks. All those were questions on which the association was likely to split. . Mr. A. Dickson said Mr. Smith had introduced a question of the policy of the association and the rocks that might be ahead. There could be no doubt those rocks were ahead, and that they were looming up prominently- 'One section ot the association was determined to i»et the headquarters in Wellington, and to take doubles out of the tournament programme. From what he knew South Islandeft were determined that neither of those ambitions of the North Islanders should bo fulfilled. He suggested the southern centres, when electing repre-, sentatives to the next Council should take care to choose men who were opposed to centralisation, and in favour of the present system of rotating headquarters.
