TAURANGA SCHOOL COMMITTEE

.MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Tanranga District High School Committee was held in the school house on Monday evening. Present ; Mr. B. P. Andrews (chairman), Airs, C. Lowe, Messrs, C. Lowe, A. Brewer. F. N, Christian, 11. J. Bickers, A. Withy, J. Neal and Staff-Captain Moore (secretary). Mr, W. R. C, Walker, headmaster (T the school, was also in attendance. The secretary of the Education Board, Auckland, wrote forwarding copy of a letter received from .Messrs. Sharp, Tudhope and \Vilson (solicitors) in reference lo a proposal to acquire a small horse paddock near the property owned by Air. G. L. Cook. The committee was asked to furnish a report in regard to (he matter. Messrs. Sharp, Tudhope and Wilson, in their letter to the Board, stated: “We understand it is proposed to acquire a small area in Seventh Avenue, Tauranga, for the purpose of a paddock for the school children’s horses. As the usable area is not more than an acre and the number of horses’is estimated at 25 or over, we are instructed by Air. G. L. Cook, who owns land adjacent, to point out that a nuisance is likely to be created by the congregation of so many horses on such a small area, and we would nsk that this aspect of the question he -seriously considered by the Board.” The chairman reported having replied to the Board that the Committee had gone thoroughly into the question and had advised to the effect that the paddock was the must suitable one obtainable for the purpose for which it was required. The Committee approved of the chairman’s action.* Accounts amounting to £l9/19/1 wore passed for payment. The Education- Board advised that the sum of £4l/15/- had been placed lo the credit of the school iund account. The Education Board forwarded circular dealing with school hours to be observed during the month of February. Mr. Bickers moved- That a dozen pictures of Their Majesties Ihe King and Queen be procured and exhibited on the walls of the various class rooms.—Seconded by Staff-Captain Moore and carried. The chairman reported that as the Band Room was no longer available for the accommodation of tho pupils he had communicated with the Education Board asking for a marquee. This had come to hartd and had been erected in, the schoolgrounds, where it was accommodating the children of standard 3. The action of the chairman was approved. The chairman moved-—That a telegram be forwarded to the Board protesting against the action of tho Board in not appointing a second assistant master, to which the school is entitled; also, drawing attention to the fact that a relieving teacher, who had been appointed, had not yet reported for duty. Air. Christian seconded and the motion was carried. The chairman reported that certain doors, windows, etc., at tho school required attention. Mr. Withy, for the Visiting Committee, reported that cows had tresI assed on the school ground. Ho i .worn mended that a padlock and chain be procured for one of the rates. Repairs were also required to several of the fences. A portion cf the ground should also be cleared of weeds, so as to be available as a playing area. | 11 was decided to carry out re- I pairs to windows, doors, etc.'; to procure material for repairing fences: to purchase padlock and chain for gate in Arundel Street ; to employ a man to clear the ground referred to by Mr. 'Withy and do other work required. It was decided to have repairs effected to the asphalt within the grounds. The matter of installing the automatic flushing system in connection with the drainage was reported upon by the chairman, and further loft in the bauds of the chairman and secretary’. Messrs.
