OTUMOETAI CONNECTION
proposed Road Across Waikareao Estuary
The Borough Engineer, Mr Mandeno, submitted a report as follows to the Council on Friday nf_ht, regarding the connection f the 'proposed road across the Waikareao Estuary with the 7 instructed I have looked over the plans prepared by Mr Clemson for the above work, and would report as follows on the G uestion in so far as that portion within the Borough.is concerned. As to the question -which is the best point at which such a road should enter the borough, it will be remembered that a road giving access? from the Waikareao is at present in use in Elizabeth Street This road gives quite a satisfactory grade, but it is not so direct a-route to the business area of the borough as Hamilton Street gives and on this consideration the route adopted in Mr Clemson's proposal is, I consider, the" best: The plans provide for a 20 feet road with a maximum grade of I in 20, which it is proposed to alter to I in 18. • The line of the road provides for a side cutting running round the back of the Domain for some three or four chains, and having rather sharp curves. Having regard to the general increase in motor traffic since ,the plans were prepared some years ago, I consider it would probably be advisable to investigate a line which would avoid these curves, and the side cutting, by the use of abreast cutting. A grade ot J in 16 can probably be obtained by this route." The matter was held over for consideration to enable the engineer to prepare ah estimate of the costof the work.
