BEATIFYING SOCIETY

Request for Ass'stanca From Borough Council

Messrs W. R. G. Walker, J. Bruce Beale, J. C. A.dams and Burgess wait id upon the Council as a deputation from the recently formed Beautifying Society asking the Council ..to sssist the society in its endeavours to beautify the town.

Mr Walker pointed out that the efforts of the Society this year must necessarily be limited. They desired that the Council should put the Redoubt in order and the Society would take in hand the beautifying of its slopes especially on the South side. They asked in addition for financial support from the Council, say to the extent of £50 this year. Mr Walker also referred to the dilapidated state of many fences about the town, and the Society desired, if no by-law now existed that one should be formed compelling property owners to keep their fences in repair. Mr Adams referred to the control of the Old Military Cemetery and expressed the opinion that the present • arrangement by j which the expenditure of money was controlled by a committee consisting of the Public Works Engineer, the Mayor and Colonel Ward, was unsatisfactory. Subsequently the Council considered the request of the deputation.

Cr Castaing thought that plans for any improvements by the Society to Borough property should be submitted to the Council. The- season was well advanced, he thought the Council would do well if it voted £20. With that amount and the money it collected the Society would do very well. Cr Roberts.seconded. Cr Beale moved as an amendment that the Society be granted a subsidy ol £l for £l up to £30. If the Council did this he thought it would be an incentive to the Society to collect subscriptions. Cr Whiting seconded. He would like to see plenty of money spent in beautifying, but the Council had not the money to grant.

The Mayor said he would like to see a large sum voted, bu under the circumstances he re gretted the Council could not do more.

Ultimately the motion was amended to read that the Council grant the Society a subsidy of £i for £l up to £20, and in ' this form it was passed, the amendment being withdrawn. The Council also granted the Society permission to u»eautify the Redoubt as suggested.
