RAILWAYMEN'S DISPUTE

TheConciliat'iDn Committee appointed to consider the matters in dispute between the railway officers and the Department, con eluded its sittings yesterday, and recommends the following : That the bonus now paid to members of the first division be cancelled as on and after April 1,1920, and a bonus at the rate of £20 per annum be granted each member of grade 8 (cadets) ; that the bonus rate be £50 per annum for grades 2to 7, inclusive, and to the captains, mates, and engineers of the late VVakatipu service as on and after April 1,1920; that the bonus recommended for grades 2t07 be taken into consideration in respect to the salaries of members of grade I ; that lodging allowances for sub grades 1, 2, and 3, be £40, £30, and £20 respectively; that married members minimum rate of-pay be =£187 10s per annum; that casual clerks be eligible for the advances to the minimum rate of pay, provided for grade 7 ; the hours of duty to be worked by officers at centres to be specified and later fixed at 38 per week, the hours at other places to be 48 per week, with time off for work in excess of that period ; seven hours to constitute an "all night" shift. Special provision is recommended for governing Sunday work, and the scale of Sunday pay ranges from 4s per hour for olßcers in receipt of over £270 per annum to 3s 3d for those getting not more than £165. The bonus to be considered in assessing rates of pay. Annual leave to be brought into uniformity with the public service provisions and limitation of 42 days' accumulation be cancelled; leave rutation to be cancelled for officers. Of,the other recommendations one is made for increased travelling advances and for the reduction of time necessary for a member to serve in any grade to qualify for the maximum superannuation retiring allowance in respect to such £rade.
