DAMAGE BY FLOODS
Rotorua, June 7
Washouts on the Railway near Mamaku and Putaruru prevented trains leaving Rotorua this morning. It is expected that thr; trains will leave this afternoon. : All the roads to the.coast arc ' interrupted, and the mail cars had to return. The Whakatane road is not expected to be restored for a week. Nine inches of rain fell in Rotorua during 36 hours. There was no damage in the town. Auckland, June 7 Heavy rain caused landslips on the Main Trunk Railway, par ticularly between Te Awamutu and Otorohanga. The express trains to-day did not run beyond Frankton and Te Awamutu. Tnere were also slips on the Rotorua and Thames lines. Te Kuiti, June 8 The floods are subsiding steadily. A fatality occurred at Honikiwi. A Public Works overseer, Mr E. F. Dunkley, a returned soldier, while crossing a swollen stream was swept irom his horse and drowned. The body has not been recovered.
