At the last meeting of the Whakatane County Council a letter was read from Mr N. H Pike, of Galatea, urging the expeditious construction of the projected outlet road from Galatea to Te Teko stating that some 400 bales of wool and some thousands of fat sheep and fat cattle had been sent -out of the Galatea district this season and all would have gone via Whakatane if the road had been made. There was one white man in the district who might be available for the work. A cricket match was played at Matata on Satusday between teams representing Matata and Whakatane. Matata batting first were dismissed for the small total of 56, but Whakatane fared worse and could only produce 36. The survey of about eight hundred acres of Crown land in the Whakamarama district has bean completed by Mr H. R. Atkinson's staff. This land is of very fair quality, and should be readily taken_ up when available for selection. Mr Atkinson is also engaged in the survey of a road from the neighbourhood of the eighteen mile peg, on the Tau-ranga-Katikati main road, back to the bush country. This road will be four or five miles in length and will provide acess to an area of about two thousand acres of undeveloped land.

The Minister for Lands, the Hon D. H. Guthrie, who is paying a visit to the Urewera country is due at Whakatane to-morrow afternoon. On Saturday he leaves for Thornton, Matata and Otamarakau. At the last mentioned place he will inspect the Hosking's Estate, against the opening of which for returned Maori soldiers only a considerable number of of protests have lately been made, with the result that the Minister promised to inspect the estate to help him to make a decision in the matter.

Amongst the candidates who were successful in passing the recent Matriculation Fxamination was Miss Alma Adams, youngest daughter of Mr J. C, Adams, who was a former pupil of the Tauranga District High School. Miss Adams proceeds to Auckland tonight to continue her studies at the Auckland Girls' Grammar School.
