Engineer's Report for January

The borough engineer submitted the following report to the Council on Wednesday nighti^-" " Owing to no metal supplies bein^ i:«bt:ti;i:ible street work this month ha.-; been confined to mainlence work and small improvements. Formation work in Harrington Street, Strand (north end) and Norris Street has been done, and the laying of street crossings•" continued- A steam tar-heater for working in conjunction with the steam roller Is being made up, and it is hoped to commence, tarscaling in a few days. As it las at present not possible to obtain metal chips or line gravel the farsealing of streets in which the macadam requires patching must be postponed, as also the footpath asphalt work. On the route of the transmit-"" sion line to Muir's Goldreefs,work is in hand at various points, ' including the making of tracks, construction *oi ferro-concrete poles and bushfelling. At Karangahake the water turbine has" been dismantled, but some work - remains in blasting out tfie foundation round the draught tubes. About two tons of parts have been landed at Omanawa by the _ Council's motor truck. The truck is also delivering all supplies for the construction work at Oropi and at Omanawa.

As regards supplies there is. some difficulty in obtaining benzine and constructional steel. Regarding cement, it is hoped'to obtain sufficient to keep going.

The completion of the Papamoa and Te Puke transmission line will be put in ■ hand when negotiations are through with the Public Works Department regarding the route."

Mr Mandenc said that as there was a difficulty 'in . obtaining, screenings he would like to try some of the Welcome Bay metal .for blending the metal in Robert Street.

Some councillors suggested trying the metal from Waimapu, while Cr Tanner suggested that the Council might try the "blending" from the cutting on the far side of the Hairini bridge em-, bankment.

The matter of securing the necessary blending was left' in the hands of the Chairman of the Works Committee and the engineer. The report was received on the motion of Cr Castaing, seconded by Cr Whiting.
