The Times Petrograd correspondent say _ : '* Extraordinary stories are coming from Kioll descriptive uf the recent lighting between the Bolsheviks, Ukrainian and Cossack forces. Over -2,000 were killed and 9,000 wounded. The lurid picture includes street battles, bombardment from both banks of the Dnieper, aud au artillery attack on Petehorsky Monastery. Bolshevik aeroplanes are bombiug indiscriminately. Simultaneously wholesale looting went oa in shops and residences by armed hooligans aud soldiers. The Jewish quarter particularly suffered. The Bolsheviks twice captured Kieff; Tho second time they, wero reinforcod by six infantry regiments, aud two divisions of artillery aad cavalry from the south-west froufc. The artillery razed the walls of Petchorsky, iv which the Ukrainians, Cossacks* ancl (.adets resisted for three days. Then the Bolsheviks enteied and made the garrison prisoners. The Ukrainians fought in the centre of the town until their ammunition was exhausted. They suffered severely and then surrendered. Two days later detachments of Ukrainians and Cossacks re-former^ and hid, and re-opened a violent fire in various parts of the town During two days of terror 300 residents were killed, A Bolshevik report states that tho massacre reached its climax by a murderous Cossack 'bombard-
ment on tne workers' quarter. L'lfcimately the Ukrainians and Cossacks were driven out and took refuge in Kievopetcbcra Monastery in the suburb*. They used artillery, but were surrounded ou all sides. The Bolsheviks heavily defeated Aliexieft near Veroness, and Alexieff retreated to jtfovocherkaafe. The Cossacks are forcing the miners at Taganrog to supply coal exclusively to the towns in the Don region, and railway men, for refusing to handle coal, are being shot."
