lleuter's Telegrams London, Feb 10
A report from French headquarters states that the Germans are multiplying attacks in the Verdun region with a, fury and persistence recalling the onslaughts of 1916. The right bank of the Meu3e has been practically au active battle sector for the past week. German assaults have been leateu oil daily, resulting only hi heavy euetuy losses, without the semblance of an advantage for the Germans. Bavarian shock troops and Hanoverians have been conspicuous in these attaoks, some of which did not reach th^ line. The French soldiers leapt the trenches and met the enemy iv the open. Other attacks gained a momentary footing, but the euemy was ejected by immediate counter- attacks
A Freuch communique reports: North of Chemiu dcs Dames and in the Fleury region, on the Verdun front, we repelled attempted attacks on small posts. There ia lively reciprocal artillery activity on tbe right bank of the Meuse and in the Vosges.
G<srman Plans Form Topic of Discussion. Australian and N Z Cable Assoc and Reuter
London, Feb 10
Opinions differ among British officers regarding the enemy's plans, which are the great topic of discussion iv the dugouts, writes Mr Philip Gibbs. Some officers fiud sound argumeuts for the belief that a German offensive on a great scale is improbable. Others express the opinion tbat the enemy will attack the Allies in several places, aud that the Germans are not massing all these divisions on the western front for mere Muff. This school of opinion hold that the enemy is possessed of enough troops for several attacks, which will be subsidiary to the main thrust, with crowds of guvs behind them. The iact that the winter training of tbe German reserves included open warfare tactics leads some to declare that tbe Germans rely ou a surprise to roll up the Allied line quickly and make a stern bid for oppn warfare on a grand scale.
Australian and N Z Cable Assoc Rec Feb 11, 12 30 p m London, Feb 10 The (ieruiaus arc reported to be still bringing up divisions for tbe expected attack, but cot faster than .cue.Allied high command anticipated. The Franco-British force:;, excluding the Americans, Belgians, and Portuguese, retain a slight superiority iv numbers. Despite the recent artilkry flutter on the Aisne, well informed quarters do not expect the attack to come vrithiu the next fortWgut. They describe the preset,: situation as not giving any cause for grave anxiety.
