KAIMAI TRACK.

Repairs Badly Needed. Council to do Urgent Work. The following letter from Mr G. H. Wallace, President of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce, regarding the Kaimai Track, was read at' the lnst meeting of the Matimata County Council:—"Yourletter of June, 18th stating tbat the communication -from the Cambridge Cbtmt 3r of Commerce had been received was duly considered at the last meeting of the Chamber when the opinion was unanimously expressed that the importance of the cubject of the Chamber's letter of 15th Jane was such as to have merited a reply from your Council. My Chamber considers, and on this point I feel certain that at leait some members pf the Matsta County Council must be in agreement, Ist that the Kaimai Track is the natural highway connecting tho Waikato with the Bay of Plenty; 2nd that the commerce between the two districts over this road represnts 8 considerable sum annually; 3id that. an improvement in this road will greatly facilitate the present businfss and will tend to further expand the existing trade. My Chamber feels therefore that it comes within its province to use it 9 influence and render its assistance to any movement whicb it may reasonably hope wiH're9ult in furthering the commercial interests of the Waikato and more particularly those of Cambridge which is situated neater to Taursnga than any other Waikato town. It was with this object that ray Chamber communicated with you on the 15th 0 June and not with any object of em* barrassing your Council et such a time as the present, which everyone Jis agreed is not the occasion when f|ocal bodies should embark on expensive road construction. My Chamber ||s given to understand by the Taurafnea Chamber of Commerce that close upon £1000 has been collected by your Council from what ia essentially • Tauianga Trading Co.. and that none of this money has been expended for | the public benefit upon the road ! nearest the source from which this revenue is derived, vit., the Kaimai Track. If the information at the, disposal of my Chamber is inaccurate I would ask that your Council will courteously state the fasts as it must be quite apparent to the majority of your councillors that the motives actuating the members of my Chamber are based solely upon a deaite to further the interets of this district, a desire | which is no doobt common to us all. | The Cambridge Chamber of Commerce I therefore tequests that your Council ! will take aome steps to improve this Mghway, thereby facilitating the interchange of commejce bstween Tauranga district and the Wiikato, and should it be necessary to approach tbe Government for a grant for this proposal my Chamber will support any action ih this direction your Council may take." Various councillor expressed their opinion on the Kaimai Track, stating that it Deeded repairs badly, and that .temporary repairs under the pretent weather conditions would be useless. ' What is needed they said is a £3000 grant to make a real good job of it. | There is at present a grant of £350 . for this road but it is not available it , present. The Council have on their own initiative spent £100, in the hope thit they ould get the £350.» It was deciied to proceed with the very urgent work at once, the chtirmW pointing oat the difficulty of getting men to go out there.—Cambridge i Independent.
