General Review.
The High Commissioner reports under date London, April 18th, 545 p m: — The French official reports say that on the left bank of the Meuse there has been a bombardment of our first lines between Mort Homme and Cumieres. On the right bank of the river the night lias been comparatively calm. It is confirmed that the German attack launched yesterday on our positions between the Meuse and the region of Douaumont assumed a character of extreme violence. From fresh information it appears that this offensive action was delivered by troops belonging to five different divisions. East of the salient of Chauffeur the Germans had succeeded ia penetrating our first line of trenches, whence they were partly repulsed by a counter-attack. In the Woevre fhere has been an
artillery duel in the Moulainvillc sector, south of Baudesapt.
? A German reconnaissance attempted to approach our trenches at Hermanpere, north of St Die, but was repulsed with grenades. Last night an enemy aeroplane threw seven bombs, including incendiary missiles, on Belfort. Three persons are repoited to be killed and six wounded. The damage to material was not important.
