ALIENS ON PUBLIC WORKS.
: Wellington, Feb 24. The ouest'on was recently raised as to employment of enemy aliens on the | Otira tunnel works. Inquirie? were ' made of the Public Works Department, and the. Hon. W. Fra<er (Minister of Public Works) directed that the following reply should bs sent to your correspondent: — ENEMY ALIENS ON MIDLAND RAILWAY WORKS. Sir,—ln reply to your inauiry, I have the honour, by direction of the Hon. the Minister of Public Works, to inform you tfcat the only enemy aliens employed on the Midland Railway (Arthur's Pass tunnel) works, according to a recent return, are two Austrians and one Hungarian. One of the AustTians is natura\ised, ard married to a New Zealand lade,- and is, moreover, a competent electrical fitter, who^would be difficult to replace. His services are therefore being retained The others are not nalrualised/and Ihe Hon. Minister has directed that they are to be employed on contract or dismissed. —I am, etc., K. W. Holmes.
