Survey cf Deviations,

A memorandum from Hon. W. Fraser. Minister of Public Wortis to Hon. W. H. Herries, regarding the survey | of road deviations was read. Mr Fra- i ser said he has noted the representations made by the Chairman and will consider tbe question of providing a subsidy g ant to assist the Council in carrying out this work when compiling the Public Works Estimates. Concerning the survey of road connection, Cambridge Road-Pye's Pa Kcad, Mr Fra^er said the carrying out of this survey appears to be a matter for attention at the hands of tbe local body. If the local body carries out the : survey and acquires the road line it will then be in a position to apply for Government assistance in the for ma - ! tion of the road. j The Chairman stated that Mr Kensington, Crown Lands Hanger , was | making inquiries concerning absentee | landsjin the neighbourhood of Gate Pa. llt was decided'to await|Mr Kensington's report before moving further in regard to the Cambridge-Pye's Pa connection. | Later, Mr Lqchhead asked what ' was the position in regard to the survey of road deviations? Mr Gray said there was £350 on '■ the Public Works Estimates for surveys. Mr Lochhead urged that surveys of certain deviations in the Te Puna district should be proceeded with as soon as possible. The Chairman and Cr Lochhead were deputed to interview Mr Atkinson, Guvernment surveyor, on the subject, and were also given power to act. A Drainage Question. Mr Silas White,To Puke wrote in reference to cleaning drain between Mr Lally's and the writer's properties. He stated: "1 think you will find by my previous letter to you that I had aready removed obstructions from my portion of the drain between section 10 and section 16, Block 2, Maketu Survey District. I must again draw your attention to Mr Laliy not having removed willow trees, etc. Unless the Council will take steps to have these removed I will be compelled to take further proceedings." Mr White also waited on the Council in regard to the matter. He said he had cleared the drain to what he considered was the boundary of his section, and contended that Mr Lally should be compelled to clear his por tion. Mr Lally pointed out that Mr White had not consulted Mr Fenton or himself in regard to the drainage work. He, Mr Lallv, intended to clear his portion of the drain when the work was effectively done elsewhere. If the work were not effectively done the Council could do it and charge .the owners. The Chairman informed Mr White that Mr Lally had already indicated that the was quite wiling to carry out his part of the work. Mr White said he had done his part of the work, but if Mr Lally did not do his part proceedings would be taken. Road at Gartienhurst.. Mrs Waflis, Gardenhurst, wrote intimating her wiah to withdraw consent in regard to selling a portion of her land to the Council for a proposed road through her property. Mrs Wallis stated: '" Certain verbal assurances with reference to the route to be followed across my farm and also to tne Council's willingness to fence the said road were then given to me. These assurances were not entered in the agreement and though they were, at the time, given in good faitb,they are now, 1 understand, practically valueless. Therefore, 1 consider myae?f justified in wishing to cancel the agreement." After the Chairman had explained the matter, it was decided to refer the question to the Waitnapu members. Working Out Kates. Mr T. Dick, Waihi, wrote offering to work rates off in road work, and stated a culvert near his section required cleaning. Cr Hume spoke in favour of acceding to the request and the" .question was referred to the supervisor with power to act. Closure of Roads. The Commissioner of Crown Lands, Auckland, wrote in regad to closure of ioads passing through or adjoining: (1) Section 7, 8, 16, 17, 09, part 54, part lot 3.0f 54, Suburbs of Tauranga, and lot 20, Te Fapa Parish; (2). sections 76 and 78,te Papa Parish. The Commissioner asked that information be supplied as to the name, address, and occupation of thsv person or-persons in whose favour'the title to the closed road or portions thereof should issue.—Left in the hands of the Chairman and clerk to reply to. • War Relief Punda. Mr J. Burns, Acting Consul for Belgium, wrote acknowledging and

hanking the Count il for tbe ir.cnthly 'contribution of & 20 to toe Aucckland Provincial Belgian Hcief Fund.--Received. , The Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief .Association forwarded circular in connection with the raising of a provincial fund of not less thau £250,000, for the care of cur soldiers who may be wonnded or disabled in the war and for the care of their depen-j dents and the dependents of thosa who have faileu in tbe war. The as sistar.ee of the chairman in furthering the object was asked for. Another ciccuiar concerning the Auckland Queen Carnival was also read. Mr W. H. Gifi'ord, for the Hospital Ship Fmu Committee, Tauranga, wrote concerning matters dealt with at a public meeting held on September 15th, in legard to the Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Keliet Association and the disposition of patriotic funds now held in Taurangh. The Council was asked: (1) Whelher it is agreeable to the proposal for th(i formation of an fAncKland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Assoziation and (2) whether it agrees to the proposed constitution of the Committee. The clerk said a meeting was to be | held next evening when Mr O. Cards- ] ton, organiser, would be present. The Chairman said he would attend the minting. Cr Lally contended that the mone> should be raised by general taxation. If that is not sufficient a war loan should be raised. £ Several Councillors agreed with Cr Lally. Jt was unanimously decided to leave the matter in the hands of t n e chairman. Returned Soldiers. Hnn. A. L. Herdman, forwarded circular dealing at length with the new department of the Government that has been established under his control, to look alter the interests of returning soldiers, to assist in the improvement of their physical condition where this is possible, and to do its be^t to iind them suitable employment. The co-operation of the Council in regard to employment was asked. 'Jhe Council unanimously decided to reply to the effect that the proposal would have its sympathy and support. Railway Crossing. A communication was read from Hon. W. Fraser, Minister of Public Works, acknowledging receipt of letter covering copy of one sent to the Resident Engineer, Tauranga, with regard to the road diversion between Rangiuru and Paer garoa. The Minister stated he was obtaining a re- ■ port on the matter. m The petition received at the previ--OU9 meeting from Messrs J. A. Mej Ghie and fifteen others asking that land for a road be acquired on the southern sida of the railway, was again considered Cr Matthews I contended that the Minister of I Public Works should be asked to ofc- | tain a repoit from the rond3 engineer as well as the railway engineer on the matter. j Other Councillors urged that no closure of roads in the vicinity should take place. Cr Lemon ndvecated the acquisition of land to complete a road-on i the southen side of the railway from the overhead bridge at 57 miles 1-6 chains to tho level crossing at 58 miles, es considerable difficulty was experienced in driving cattle up the steep embankment at the overhead bridge across tke railway line. Crs Matthews, Grilfen and Lally concurred. It wa3 pointed out that the road, as advocted, would also obviate the necessity of diiving cattle over the lineat 58 miles. Cr Lally: We will have the road. Cr Lemon: Yes, we will have it. A motion waa unanimously adopted, deputing the Chairman to take further action in the matter on the lines indicated by the various speakers. Approaches to Bridge. On the motion of Cr Stewart, seconded by Cr Lally, the Chairman was' empowered to mnke immediate application to the Minister of Public Works lor a grant for the approaches to the Wairoa Bridge.
