THE COUNCIL AND ECONOMY
(To the Editor.)
r ,?ir> —From a report in the "Times "I gather the, information that the Council intend having a Gala Day—a No 1 size iJig Function —to celebrate the introduction of electricity into Tauranga ; this is to take place at no far distant date. Now, Bir, just imagine celebrating a launch, three weeks or so after the ship has been in coanxiission. Tis farcical, and unfortunately costly, presuming of course that the cost—or even part—is to come from Eorough funds. Ratepayers don't grudge the Councillors having a picnic, and grant they aro undoubtedly entitled to the glory in the (liiue)light, but under present conditions is it wise to expend say £20 to £30 on this taihoa function when such money could be utilised to metal say, 30 to 70 yards of road, or, to "be patriotic, and donate the. cash to some patriotic fund. Finally, Sir, the Council might consider tho Mayor's platform at the last election and go for TRUE ECONOMY. Tauranga, Oct 5, 1915,
