PROPOSED PREEZING WORKS.

The Whakatane Press, of Wednesday last, in referring to the above matter, gays:—The keenness of the settlers of the district and others who have interested themselves in the of establishing freezing works in tha Bay of Plenty, is shown by the fact that the meeting at Te Puke, at which were present the experts appointed to select a site, guarantees were given eoveritg 12,150 shares in the proposed company. If this can be taken as an indication of the manner in which, the capital required will be subscribe} throughout the Bay, then the establishment of the works at the earliest moment is assured. There is no doubt, but that the people of the Whakatane County will do their full share in assisting the formation locally of this important industry. It is also gratifying to learn that steps are being taken to have provisional directors appointed, the districts canvassed for shares and the company formed, without waiting to obtain the report of the experts, so that when the selected site is notified no time wiil be lost in erecting the works. The procedure to be adopted is that one provisional director may be appointed by the settlers of each centre, and that the provisional director? so appointed are to meet at Matata on S&turday, October 9tb, to prepare the prospectus, draw up the articles and memorandum of Association, arrange to have the districts canvassed for shares and otherwise place the company on a proper footing. In this way, no doubt, a great deal can be attained, but it is certain that the full extent of the support will not be given until it is definitely known in which locality the works am to be erected. Whether the experts have not yet had the opportunity of compiling their report, or have withheld same -with the object of securing more capital for the company, from districts other than that in which it has been decided to put tne works, in the belief that the revelation of the site would defeat the purpose, we are utjable to say, but judging by the whole-hearted way in which the settlers have taken the matter up and the confidence reposed in the judgment of the experts, there is little need to keep back the information, and the sooner it is made public the lighter will be the task of achieving the ultimate object."
