Bay of Plenty Times SATURDAY, MAY, BTH, 1915. THIEVING ON WATERFRONT.

As*will be seen on reference to the report of tlic Harbour Board meeting published in another column the sneak thief is, making his presence felt in Tauranga. According to. the report cf the Harbourmaster some person or persons broke into the shed on the Victoria .Wharf and stole a quantity of equipment and material belonging to the Harbour Board aud Captain Millar. The Board decided to request the Harbourmaster to report the matter to the police and no doubt tho latter will make a vigilmt search with a view to tracing the missing articles and briugiug the offenders before the court. Since the meeting of the Harbour Board we have beeu informed of the theft of ai tides belonging to boatowners, aud in one instance at least the appropriation was mean aud contemptible in tbe extreme. For many years Tauranga enjoyed an immunity from petty pilfering ou the waterfront, but it appears that some of the lightfingered fraternity are now located in the place and are determined to come into possession of other people's property by adopting dishonest, and reprehensible methods. In bringing the matter of thefts before the notice of the, Harbour Board. Captain Millar has done the right thiug," and the public may rest assured that the local poli.e will leave no stone unturned to bring tlte culprit or culprits to book lu the interests of the law-abiding section of the community it is to be hoped that the police will be successful in their eilorts and that the stipendiary magistrate will be given an opportunity of inflicting salutary punishment ou tbo responsible individual or individuals.
