A letted was read at the last meeting of the County Council from Mr W § Short, Assistant Under-Secretary of the Public Works Department, regard* ing the road along the south side of the railway between Te Puke and Paengaroa Restated that it was believed some time ago that this land could be acqnired without payment of compensation and that being so it was proposed to acquire a road line bn't not tojform the road. It has now been established.that the road line cannot be acquired without payment of compensation, and the Government has therefore no intention of acquiring it. Means of communication are already provided, and if the Council wishes to have this additional rpadit must itself undertake thc matteiv-Gr Southey said a deputation had waited ou Mr Holmes, engineer-in-chief to Uie Public Works Department, regarding the matter and hc had promised to do his best in the direction of having the road line acquired.

The late Lieutenant Ronald T. Matheson, who was killed in action in German South West Africa, leftAucKland in 1900, just after the outbreaKM the Boer War; and joined the ImperW Light Horse. He was twice mentionea in despatches for capturing a small parry of three armed Boers and for,carrymg wounded men to safety.
