MUNICIPAL BAND.
ANNUAL MKETING.
Tiic aaiuui meeting uf the Tau-! ranga Muaio.pa! Ikind was held in the I Baudroom on Xiiiu^day evening, \i. C. Robbitis (,\layorj presided over a large attendance or members, j Mrs.sri J. {J. Green and J. Torranee, ! members of "tin) Band Committee of the Borough Council, were also present. An inspection uf the iustrnmen's was made by the Council's committee The Mayor explained that the B<i- j roa^h Council's committee had appointed a secretary (Mr Uaigent) to collect subscriptions from lr.moiary members. These fees, with the borough subsidy of £'!') per annum, would go to pay the Bandmaster's salary amounting to X'4o. The k Burougji Council had paid i;.")0 towards the cost of tiic band instruments, but there was still ;i sum of ii looto be paid. It was prop »sed to hold a carnival in the near fui':iv and he anticipated that a sum 0.. X-00 would thereby be raised. He was pleased to learn that the Baud was strong in membership, and he had heard very favourable comment from musical critics on the performances that had been given. According to agreement the Band was to givo nine open-air performances per annum — six in the northern part of the town and three in the (Quarter Acres. A good band was a necessity in the community and contributed in no small degree to the success of such gatherings as sports, race meetings, etc. The Council's committee hail no voice in the internal management of the Band, such business being entirely in the hands of the Band members. He paid a tribute, to the generosity of Mr and Mrs J. G. Green in holding a function in their grounds in aid of the Band.—Applause.—He assured members that the Committee of the Borough Council would do all in their power to assist them anil thanked those whose eflbrts had resulted in the establishment of the Band Mr Green said he felt conh'dent that the Band would be placed on a sound Jiuaneial footing. The Borough Council had agreed to pay for the iustruments^bnt it was hoped that the carnival would more than reimburse the Council for that liability and leave a surpkis as well. He anticipated that the honorary members' subscriptions and the Borjugh Couacil's subsidy would cover the amount of the Bandmaster's salary. The earnings of the Band would be entiielv in the hands of the Band to deal with as members deemed lit Mr Meehan suggested that the Secretary of the Baud should be paid a ; small salary The Mayor said that was a question for the l?and to decide 111 reply to questions, the 31 ay or said that members would not be held responsible for the loss of instruments by lire. Any member should get a clearance ceitificate from the Town Clerk before resiguiug from the Baud or transferring an instrument. The instruments were the property of the Council and could not be sold or exchanged The Baud then proceeded to hold the annual meeting, the Mayor presiding The minutes of the last general meeting were read and confirmed The financial statement disclosed a credit balance of <£4i -3s Mr F. Hammond moved—That the balance sheet be adopted.—Seconded by MrH. Foxcroft and carried ".Mr Hammond proposed —That the positions of conductor tiiicl bandmaster bo amalgamated and 15lied by one individual—Seconded by Mr x\. 1\ Foxcroft and carried The election of officers was then proceeded with and resulted as follows : Conductor and Bandmaster, Mr A. Shaw Secretary, Mr K. Sherlock Trcasure"r, Mr T. Carter Committee of Management, Messrs F. H. Hammond, G. Median, C. Oliver, and A. 1\ Foxcroft, with bandmaster, secretary and treasurer^ Custodian and librariau, Mr C. Oliver Auditors. Messrs J. G. Green and J. Torranee It was decided to recommnnd the committee to provide full scores of all sets of music I The Mayor wished the Band a sucj cessfal year aud said he hoped all members would work harmoniously with the object of promoting the success of the organisation .Mr Hammond proposed a vote of thanks to the Mayor for presiding, the same being carried by acclamation I —■—— mmmm ?
