OBITUARY.
EEV. CANON GOODYEAR
At 11.-10 last evening there passed away the last of tbe band of early Maori missionaries scut out from England by the Church Missionary Society in the person of the Itevj Canon Goodyear. The reverend gentleman j had been in failing health for some tinia and had latterly been confined to Lis bed, passing away peacefully last evening. He was born in Lutoa, Hertfordshire. England, in 1850. In 1875 he entered college for training for missionary work in New Z "aland. He arrived iu tho Colony in 1878 and was first stationed atWairoa. liawke'a Bay. In 1883 Mr Goodyear was moved to Maketu and remained there till 1896, when he was moved to Tauranga as Superintending Maori Miss-iuaer for I tho whole of tho Day of Tlonty £l)U----tricfc, iuuluuiug Rotorua. Since bring | sent out by tho Church missionary Society thirty-live years ago Mr Goodyoar has b«:eu maintained by that. organisation and is the lastrof the baud of Church workers Bent out by them to New Zealand. A few months ag<; at Napier Mr Goodyear was: created a Canon of the Church. By his death the Church hag lost an earnest worker and our Maori brethren a firm friend and loving pastor, and the sympathy of all those members of both races who kuew the late Oanon will go out to the relatives in their great bereavement.
