BREACHES BY LOCAL NATIVES,
Hare, a Native, of Matakana Island, was brought before the local Court yesterday for failing to send his child to school the required number of times during the week ending March 29th.
Poitoi, another Maori from the same locality, was similarly charged.
Mr D. Asher acted a3 interpreter. Constable Skinner prosecuted, and the defendants were not represented by counsel.
The two defendants pleaded guiltyOne of them, in extenuation, stated that his child was required to assist with work at home, and the other said his child had been ill.
Mr WHelan, teacher of the Ttf Kotu-1 kutuku School, said he would not press for a heavy penalty
Mr Dyer said the Ja\v< was that the J< children should be sent tv .school. If a child were ill permission should be obtained from the committee to keep the child from school. A child could not be kept at home to work.
A fine of 2s, with costs 17s od, was imposed in each case.
