A CANDID COLONIAL.
During his "recent visit to England Mr A. \V. -Kutherford visited the King's stables, and did not think much of either the horses or Iho manner in which they are kept. Indeed, lie goes pretty near lese-ma. jeste in saying that with few exceptions they were a lot of sorry-look-ing old crocks. "Many of them are over 20 years of age. Most of them never had been any good. One of the exceptions was the late' King's hacks, a line type of the short-leg-ged 'weight-carrier, oldish, t>ut with a good hack action and a line intelligent head. The ladies' hacks would fetch about a tenner each in New Zealand." The famous creamcoloured and black horses used on
State occasions,, "at close quarters are sour-headed, ugly brutes."
