Bay of Plenty Times WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 1912. LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL.
IT Is highly ''gratifying to,;ffc&rn that the two leading s local bodies' in this district—the Borough- and : County. Counc;iV>--are in full accoyd that th^ Borough and County of Tauranga should'not be in luded within fheare a of the proposed Corommclel Provincial Distri't. Further, they are! of one mind that Tauranga should be placed in the B-y of Plenty Province, as wa; advocated" by this journal on Friday last. The, agricultural and pa-toral interesf3 of the coast are identical in every way, and thi- is beeoming'jmore manifest" every day as railway; con- j struction proceeds. A splendid i-ecip- ! rocal spirit w js shown in public affairs yesterday when the Mayor (Mr p. C. ftpbbinslJed his Gouncillori into the Coronation Hall tojsy the question of provincial boundaries before the County Chairman (Mr D. J. McEwen)h and his rolleaguev. Both sets of public men met each other in a most generous spirit, and as a reuilt of that meeting we have no hesitation; in saying; that the delegate 5 from the county, will proceed to Whakatane this week^ as a united party. Thi3 is greatly lo be desired, as at this juncture it is impossible to tell what discussion may>_arise at the prelirriininary meeting at Whakatane. One thing, however, seems certain, and that is that t^e delegates from our borough and county will stand shoulder to shoulder in* protecting the interests of the Tauranga district. The Borough Council., will select its delegate today and the Judea Drainage Board should see to-it that a delegate goes to Whakatane, and as the Borough and County Councils have decided to share the expenses of the combined delegation there should be no obstacle in the way of a representative going. Further, we ; hope the Katikati Road Board, Te ;Puke Road Board, and Te Puke and Te Tumu Drainage Boards will all rally to the ! standard and send delegates to swell the strength of the party. The need I for such united effort does not come | every day, and all local bodies will ibe acting in the truest interest? of their constituents by being represented. Does the Tauranga County-want to contribute towards the upkeep of the Thames and Waihi Hospitals and Thames Harbor Board? If not, now is the time to act! We congratulate the County and Borough Councils, and especially Messrs B. C. RobbmV'and D. J. McEwen, on the amicable understanding reached yesterday, and hope that eventually the aspirations which prompted those present will materialise to the benefit of all residents in the borough and county.
