Mr Morten cen spoke in favor of grading and metalling Cameron-road and other thoroughfare?. He thought about 24ft. of Cameron-road should be metalled, set off with grass walks on either fide, and trees planted at inter-
val?
Mr F. W. Schreiber expressed the opinion that the centre of the road should be metalled, and a good footpath provided. He thought treeplanting could be deferred or left to the various property-holders. He considered the grades for the whole of the Borough roads should be taken by a surveyor.
MrT. Allely said it wai a matter of finance. He was in favor of metalling, providing the money could be raised without pressing too heavily on the ratepayers. Personally he considered about £8000 might be borrowed.
Mr Mortensen said the interest on a loan of £20.000 would be £1100. The rates levied in the Borough at present reached £1300. He had.written to the State-guaranteed Advances Office asking for information re loans, and hoped to place ssame before the next meeting of the Association.
The chairman said that it was absolutely essential to do something to Cameron-road immediately. He suggested that a practical scheme should be thought out and placed before the Borough Council, with -a view to having the road iniproved at once. Personally, he" thought * Cameron-road should be widened out, and levelled so as to provide more fpace for traffic. A piece of road near Mr Allely's had been treated as h<! would like to see the rest of the road improved.
Mr Allely said that a piece of Cam-eron-road, about 61 chair.s long and 22ft. wide,: had been levelled and graded at a cost of between £7 and £8.
■'■ Mr C W. Schreiber was in favor of raising a lean?, and thdught metal should be put on the roads instead of sand.
Mr Chappell stated that levels of the town had been taken.
Mr Teasey moved: That h deputation from the association be appointed to wait on the borough Council, and ask that body to plough and level and also remove earth on either fide of Camer-on-road at once, to allow traffic to be diverted from the centre of the thoroughfare during the winter months, or if each side cannot be improved, at least one Fide be treated, and that a proper.level to work from be given. Mr Schreiber ■ seconded, and the motion was passed unanimously. Messrs J. P. Chappell, W. T. Teasey, and T. Allely were appointed a deputation to wait on the Borough Council, and the secretary was instructed to notify the Town Clerk that the deputation would attend the Council's meeting on the 13th inst.
Mr Allely said a lot,of shaiities were going up in the Quarter Acres which he thought were a disgrace to the place. If the Borough Council had power he would like to see a stop put to the practice. Several speakers thought the erection of such buildings should be prohibited, but doubted if the Borough Council possessed ;the power to take, action. ./ ," y ; .•- \ Mr Morten sen spoke in favor of an electric lighting Fcheme for the town.
Mr F. W. Schreiber said any person who had a water-tap could instal a 3--16 in. jet for a cost of £14 10s, which would give splendid electric light for the largest building in the borough. A letter was read from Mr Morten?en, resigning his position as secretary of the Association, as it wa3 his intention to 'leave the town for a few months.
The chairman expressed regret that Mr Morten -en was resigning. " Mr Mortensen sajd that although he was resigning he{ would still take a keen interest in trie welfare of the.AssoJation.
Mr Teasey moved: That the resignation of Mr Mortensen be accepted and that the appointment of his successor be deferred till next meeting. Seconded by Mr T. W. Schreiber and carried. . .
It was decided to hold the next meeting.on Friday, May 17th. The usual compliment to the chairman terminated the pr. ccedings.
