MAYOR ISLAND AS A GAME PRESERVE.

(To the Editor.)

Sir.—Tt is witli naxieti pleasure 1 road the references in t/lve Bay . oi Plenty Times last week regarding Ihe good \>-oi't that is being' carried out by the Taurang-a Acclimatisation Society in the cause of sport in this district. The President (Mr J. A. McKenzie). and men like Messrs A. border and IT. Soutlu'y, are to bo congratulated for the able services they are rendering1 to the cause oi acclimatisation. As you have stated on several occasions the Taurangra County is one oi the best sporting localities in New 'Zealand, and it is pleasing to note that our local acclimatisation -directors are keeping right abreast of the times, and are spending1 the money entrusted to them to the fullest advantage. As a sportsman T desire to testify my appreciation of the efforts of tin* three above-named gentlemen and the committee of the Society that, is aSSistinir them in thfir latidaljle flforls. F would like- to suggest that the Ac- ! clinmtisntion Society at once tuko steps in the direction ot endeavouring to imhiee (Javcrniiii'iu to aci[i)ire Mayor Island as a gaino pr> •servo. This island is uninhabited by Kuropvans or Natives, and it would lie a jroyil stroke it the (tovermnent ptiriliascc! it J'roui .thf .Maoris ami sot it apart for sporting purposes. I understand it is eminently suitable for pigs, troats, etc., and if ii weiv well stocked by the Acclimatisation Society it would become in a few years an excellent hunting ground, anvl a decided acquisition to the sporting urea that is controlled by the Tauranya Acclimatisation Society. Perhaps thsl Chamber of Commerce woidd also assist in Ihe matter of making reprcsetitat ion-; to Gu- \ ennuent.—1 - am. et c-. 1 ' iruUTSMAX.
