DISCUSSION IN THE COUNCIL

At the meeting of the Borough Council on Monday evening, the question of beautifying the streets was brought forward by the reading of a letter from Mr G. A. Ward, offering for the use of the Treo-riant-ing Committee of the Council, half-a-dozen young palms, Phoenix dactylifero, between two and three years old. Should the Streets Committee contamplate rei^lacioig any ofl the Strand palms which may 'have failed, Mr Ward said that personal experience showed that Phoenix reclinata and Brahea filamcntosa were extremely quick.-gr owing and very hanly here.

Mr W. R. Turner wrote stating>he ■wished to improve the appearn-nco of the bank and cliff at the lower end of Elizalxjth Street, between Selwyn Street and tho estuary, and desired permission to plant shrub.% etc ; also to be allowed to protect them from cattle by fencing.or otherwise as the occasion demands.
