The Royal Commission appoiuted to inquire and report upon the suitability of the btakes used on tho Auckland ; trams opened this rooming. The points for inquiry are whether having regard to the grades on the tramways and the speeds the care travel, the congested street traffic, and safety of the public the system of brakes already adopted or any of them are suitable, efficient and sufficient. If the said brakes are not suitable and sufficient what other brake would you recommend ; and, generally, to inquire into any matter connected with the Subject of the inquiry or regarding the necessity of any new legislation in connection therewith. It was slated that the Tram Company maintained that the existing brakes were perfectly safe and effective, but i 9 prepared to alter the system, not because it is inadequate, . but because they recognised the desirability and necessity of working harmoniously wifcn the Government and their employees.
