AN UP-TO-DATE LAUNCH
A very servneable-looking addition to the" local fleet of motor boats was made last Friday toy the arrival of the ''Severn," built 'by Messrs Logan Bros., and engined by Messrs W. A ; . Ryan & Co., of Auckland, for Mr G. u A. Wayd, of this town. The boat is 30ft long by 7 ft Gin beam, with a high freeboard, and drawing about 2ft aft. She has a wide tuck stern and runs up with a gotod .Sheer to the bow, whioh, while very iine ,on the water-line, flares but rapidly above, giving a roomy fore-deck, and the promise 1 of keeping a very dry boat in aheaty head sea. The interior of the boat is approximately subdivided into three compartments, each 7ft long, namely, engine-room (immediately aft of thj fore-deck), cab-in and after cock-pit. From the fore-end <of the cabin, about the* centre of the boat, tlicne rises -a -glazed conning toWci 1 Sft 3; 2ft, for navigating purposes, a wheel being placod on the bulkhead between the cabin .and engine-room, the engine <b«uig thus also Nroughi uwd-er the. immediate contrpl of tjre man at the wheel, the starting, stopping, and reversing lever being within comfortable reach through a sliding door. The cabin has a roomy bunk each side, with lockersi under, and is lit by two hinged portholes and two fixed oval lights ; similigr lighting, is also provided for the en-gine-room, which also has communication to the fore-deck by means of a scuttle. The engine is an 8 h.p. Union, double cylinder, and is fitted with a primary "battery, an "autosparker," and an 8-volt accumulator. The last named is charged by the auto-sparker, which * /supplies more current than is required to f.re the engine, and thus -a store of electricity is laid up for supplying two small ;eloc-tric lights in the en-gine-room aflrt two . in the. cabin, the pairs being on separate switches and will run for several 'hours on the accumulator after the engine is stopped. A' pole .mast, French lug-s-ail and accessaries corrtplete the outfit, and the craft appears to be as comfortable and seaworthy as one of her size can be made. The' workmanship, both in <boalr ami machinery, reflects the greatest credit on the firms concerned therewith, and the owner— as the earliest pioneer in motor bloating in this part of New Zealand's waters— if? to be congratulated in possessing so neat and businesslike a veseel
