BOAT RACE AT HOBART.
- o A NEW ZEALAND VICTORY. (Received 25, 12145 a.m.) HOBART, Feb. 24. The four-oared boat rice, postponed tram yesterday, came off to-day ovtr the championship course of thtx miles, on the upper reaches of the Derwent. The water was smooth, but the wind w^s agair.st the crew. A good start was effected, Queens, land being first to Catch the water and thus got a slight lead. Afttr 200 yards Wanganui picked Queanslajrc? up, Nagambei following suit, and then Blenheim and Dexweni. Wanganui then went to t&e front, rowing a fine even stroke, and putting every ounce or weigU into it. rapidly outpacing their opponents, Nagambei beir.g i#xt. -then Blenheim and Dsrwent. Queensland went to the rear, Adelaide being last. The further they went the bigger the gap Wanganui made from Nagamtie. and Blenheim was catobing Victoria. Wanganui was now three or four lengths .ahead of Napjambie, Blenheim 1 and Derwettt almost in line for second place. During the -third mile Wanganui was six lengths ahead, Blenheim pulling into second place. The pace told its tale on Derwent, who fell back fourth. There was no further alteration, Wanganui winning, by six lanffWis, with Elenheim second, Victoria third, Derwent fourth, Queensland a bad fifth, Sandy Bay sixth and Adelaide last. Time, 20m 42 2-ss. Prolonged cheers greeted the winners 'from the crowds -on the steamers. Members of the crews seen subsequently adroieted the race was a h-ard one, and that ths pzee set Hyy Wanganui gave them no chance. Nag-mabie were favourites, >snth Derwent next in demand. To-night the winners were presented with a -handsome shield, specially i made for the race, while -each membes of the - crew was given a cold medal.
