LORD KITCHENER'S TOUR.
(Pel- Press Association.) - Chbistchobch, Feb. 22. This morning Lord Kitchener was welcomed by the Mayor and coan cillors at Lyttelton. He went on a tour of the hirbour defences, contenting himself with observing the guns and electric light station on the north side of the harbour. He was then taken ashore to the principal fort, Port Jeivois, and there inspected 150 men He made a thorough inspection of the armament, and made careful inquiries as to the soundings of the. various parts of, the harbour. Lord Kitchener's Lyttelton visit is a veritable flying survey. One secret of his capacity for business was his habit of using every minute and ascertaining exactly how long each journey would take. He wanted to know why Lyttelton tunnel was not duplicated to, prevent* the blocking of ordinary traffic, and said the tunnel would be useless in time- of war. He inquired closely as to the time iti which the Christen urch trip, could be made by motor car. CHEISTCHfECH, F#b 23. There was an enormous crowd at the show grounds in the afternoon when lord Kitchener inßpected the cadets. Lord-Kitchener and the Prime Minister were cheered enthusiastically as they drove on to the grounds. i
