Hurricane in Queensland.
COOKTOWN LAID IN RUINB.
BRISBANE, Jan. 21.
A terrible disaster is announced, in which the large township of Cooktown has been completely laid in ruins by a hurricane. The news is so far too scanty to render possible any detailed description, and is confined to a brief telegram read by the postmaster of Pnlmerville from the postmaster of 'ooktown, in which it is stated that no fatalities have occurred in the town, { hough there have been numerous minor casualties.
The Postal Department advises that the gales experienced at Cooktown last week increased to a cyclone on Saturday night, and did enormous dam agfl. Nearly every building in town wai damaged, and numbers are entirely de« Oiobshed. The post office is unroofed, the country is flooded, and the wires blown down. The wind is now modern Hting, but it is raining heavily.
