SAWMILLS DESTROYED.
WELCOME RAIN,
INVERCARCJILL, Jan. 22
Heavy rain set in yesterday morning, which will be a boon to farmers and the salvation of many bush hcmesteaxis which were threatened by fire. The damage amounts to thousands of pounds by the 'destruction of sawmills, houses, fencing, crops, and stock. Owing to tho •dense; smoke in the town it was impossible' to see a hundred -yarns ahead this morning. The mills destroyed include Timpany Bros.' at Waimatua ; Broad, Small and Go's, at Tisbury ; Fairweathers, at Tisbury ; and Wallis' at H^dgehope.
