JAPANESE FLEET SIGHTED OFF VLADIVOSTOCK.

London, May 1. — Alexieff, in the course of his report to headquarters, states that ten Japanese cruisers and six torpedo boats were sighted off Vladivostok on Friday morning. There was a fog over the sea at the time and the Japanese quickly disappeared from view. THE RECENT JAPANESE VICTORY. News of the great Japanese victory has now been definitely confirmed. Fighting has been steadily proceeding at the Yalu since Tuesday. On Thursday the Japanese effected a crossing of the river and quickly got into action with the enemy. Vigorous fighting ensued, as the result of which the Russian left flank was turned. On Sunday the Japanese succeeded in capturing Kenliencheng, on the Yalu river, regarded as the key of the Russian position. A Japanese flotilla of gunboats co-operated with the batteries on the south bank of the Yalu during the operations. LAYING MINES OUTSIDE PORT ARTHUR. It is stated in St. Petersburg that the Japanese are laying automatic mines for a distance of several miles outside Port Arthur to prevent the Russian ships in Port Arthur and outside from effecting a junction.
