A Massachusetts inventor bas contrived what has been christened a ' mechanical rat.' It is a piece of | clockwork running on wheels, which, when wound up ia able to run 400 ft before giving out. It is used for taking string or wire through pipes or narrow passages, as when laying down electric lines. The end of the string if tied to the tail of the ' rat,' which, when properly wound, runs through the pipe with it, and by this string heavier ropes or wires can be easily drawn through.
