SCIENTIFIC EXPLORATION OF THE MACQUARRIES.
The Macquame Island is generally known because of its penguin rookeries, its millions of eggs, and myriads of young birds. But it now appears that in addition to these the island, bleak and desolate as it is, teems with insect life of a very norel and interesting character. Specimens are being taken (says tb« Otago Daily Times) by Mr Joseph Burton, taxidermist, who has : > spent some months upon ths island in scientific researches, ' Amongst other things, Mr Burton has discovered a minutely small shell, so small indeed as only to be distinguishable with the aid of a powerful microscope. These - shells are as clear as glass, and of a pretty brown colour. They art found in the soft moss with which and tussock grass the island is clothed. Taking the area of the island at 100 square miles, with an average altitude of 1000 ft, it must contain myriads of these interesting little creatures, a full account of which will no doubt be contributed to the scientiie world by Mr Burton when that gentleman has completed m> explorations of the island.
