THE NEW GOVERNMENT VETERINARY SURGEONS.

By the last mail the Department of Agriculture received a letter from the Agent-General stating that 110 applications were received for the appointments of six veterinary surgeons for the colony. These were by instruction of the Premier referred to a Mr Hunting, who selected thirteffift of the candidates as apparently most suitable. These thirteen candidates met at the Agent-General's office on the 31st ultimo, and were interviewed by Mr Hunting and Mr Cameron (Inspector of Produce) the result being that Mr Hunting recommended Measra Neale* Crafcbe, Sanderson, Nelson^ Wilkie and Clayton for Appointment. These gentlemen have accordingly been appointed, having produced satisfactory medical certificates as to the state of their health ; and arrrangements were made by which they left for the colony in the first week of this month. All the gentlemen selected are entitled to sign M.R.O.V.S. after their names. Only one is over thirty years of age, and four of them are single. All had their applications backed up by very excellent testimonials. MxCharles Raymond Neale comes from Henley on-Thames; Mr Alexander Crabb fromKeuilworth, Warwickshire; Mr Charles J. Sanderson from Southsea, Hants ; Mr Edward Nelson from London S.W.; Mr Henry Charles Wilkie from St. Ives, Hunts; and Mr John Greenwood Clayton from Sarapford Peverell, Tiverton, Devon. These experts will be distributed over the colony, and their chief duty/will be to examine the animals killed for home consumption and export.

To j udge by President Kruger's present appearance, one would hardly imagine that he" had ever been nimble enough to climb a scaffold pole about 100 feet high and stand on his head on a platfarm at the top. Yetthis is what he did years ago in his enthusiasm at the completion of the church at Bustenburg.
