About 110 eu tries have been received for the leaping competition in tlie Manuwatu Show, 30 for the hunters' competition, 20 for the steeplechase and 25 for the pony leaping competition.
Large numbers of blackbirds, thrunhee, starlings, linnets goldfinches, and even pheasants, are doing much damage to the strawberry crops at Nortbcote and Birkenbead. Many of these birds are yearly shot poisoned, or trapped, and yet they seem more numerous than ever, and are a very heavy tax upon the fruitgrowers.
