DESTRUCTION OF SMALL BIRDS.
Success of phosporised grain,
The 'North Otago Times' reports that after a deal of experimenting a farmer in the. Oamuru district hit on a method of destroying the email feathered pests in his neighbourhood in a wholesale manner. For a time he fed thousands of birds on unpoisoned oats. He then mixed a quantity of oats with phosphorous, and added a large quantity of phosphorised oats and chaff to the measure allocated to tempt the birds. The result was far beyond his expectations. Whereas the paddocks and trees were alive with birds previously, there are now, he says, not half-a-dozen birds in the neighbourhood. Beneath the trees they lie in thousands, and they can be seen dead all over the paddocks. The destruction was almost complete, and he says it is the most successful poisoning he has heard of. He ascribes it solely to the phosphoriced oats, which the birds took freely. This seems probable, as he had previously used in a similar mannor the ordinary poisoned wheat with hardly any effect.
Let the croaker croak, and the hard time howler howl. Wo know hard times as bad as- those in a sick household. The start — a slight cough, gets worse, .keeps everybody iv the house awake, father swears, mother ditto. Avoid these troubles. Keep a bottle of Woods' Great Peppermint Cure in the house; it never fails, a half-crown bottle will cure the whole family.
