MAKETU RACES.

Hack races were held in Kelly's paddock, about half way between Maketu and Te Puke, on Saturday last. There was a very large attendance of Maoris, who brought watermelons on to the course iv drays, buggies, kits, etc., in fact such a display has never been seen before in this distort. Mr A. Bird had a refreshmene booth on the course and two bookies were operating. The following is a lis of the winners. Hurdes.— Havoc, 1; Abdalla, 2 ; Tommy, 3. Four started, but the winner, whose starting price was 3 to 1 on, had it all his own way. Maiden Plate.—The Peer, 1 Hauriti, 2 ; Kaheka, 3. For this there was a field of six. Starting price 2to 1. The bookies fell in. Cup—Princess of Thule, 1; Hauriti, 1. There were six star-j ters- but it was a somewhat difficult matter for the rider of the Princess to keep her from losing I the others altogether. Betting '3 to 1 on. Ladies Purs .—Princess of Thule, 1 ; Hauriti, 2 ; The Peer. 3. In a field of five this race vva>* a gift to the Princess - and the betting rose a point. Pony Race— Hauriti, 1; Louie, 2 * Lucy, 3. Four start* d and with the Princess away Hauriti proved himself a point ahead of the rest, numerous bets being made at 2 to 1 on. Flying Stakes—Kaheka, 1 - L-uie, _ ; Tommy, 3. Five started, but the race was a perfect _ift to Kaheka. The bookies asked 20 to 1 ou and were taken a couple of tiroe_ even at that price. Consolation—Lu.y, 1 ; Abdalla, 2 ; Tommy, 3. There wan a field of five, but Lucy came ho tne, the betting being 2 to 1.
